Most of the cousins were scared of Dad when they were little. Especially Aunt Ruth's kids. I had heard that she would tell them if you're not good Uncle Willie will get you. I don't remember Dad giving us very many spankings, didn't have to, he could put the fear of God in you with a look even when weren't facing him. Poor Dad, we were so bad. He would come into the bedroom in the morning and flip the light switch to wake El and me up. One night before we went to bed, we unscrewed the light bulb and when he flipped the switch, no light, we just howled. Dad had a way of popping you on the butt with the back of his hand that would have you scooting on the floor like a dog with worms.
All my friends, like family, called Mom, Aunt Bee and Dad, Uncle Willie, even now when my friends speak of them it's still Aunt Bee and Uncle Willie.
Mom would make us kids the most beautiful birthday cakes. Dad would cook chicken and rice better than Mom, and could he fry chicken. When canned biscuits came out Mom would fix them. He told her finally learned to make biscuits. She warned us NOT to tell him. This went on for a long time, but he caught her one morning, but he insisted he knew all the time. He was just tired of playing the game. HA!, HA!
When the bought the poultry store Mom worked many long hours along with Dad, Uncle Sam and Aunt Tincy, but she never forgot special events or birthdays. When things were really busy, El got to work up front at the counter. I worked on special orders and weekends, but for some I got to work in the back in the feathers, blood and guts. Lucky me!
Living just upstairs, Judy would come visit in the evenings. If Dad was late, he would share his supper with Judy. I remember the sweet potatoes that for some reason Aunt Tincy said she would never eat at home but would start.
He taught her how to eat only the Swiss cheese holes. Do you remember that, Judy? Little Sandy stole the show at my wedding.
Uncle Sam was really like a big brother. I always loved the times he would let me to go Potosi with him to buy chickens. Didn't take much to make me happy back then. And it got me out of school a few times. He never told on me when he caught me smoking.
These are just a few of my treasured memories. I wish I could have been there for more of the weddings and showers and new babies. I'm very proud I am a part of our wonderful family. Love you all.
Oh yes, for those who never knew I had any other name but Duckey, it's Margarte, but just call me Marge.
Graveside Service for Margarte Greenhaw will be held at 10am at the King Cemetery in Kemp on Saturday, June 19, 2021.
