Death has claimed a great family man, William "Willie" Samuel Lundy of Trinidad, who went gently "into that good night" in his home, October 12, 2021. He was the fourth of eight children born to J.R. and Mable Lundy, February 8, 1935, north of Kerens, near Bazette and spent over a decade of his childhood south of Kerens, in Rural Shade.
He graduated from Trinidad High School in 1954, a member of the school's first 6-man football team, along with his younger brother Jack.
On September 10, 1960, he wed Emily Gail Stanfield of Trinidad for life.
He was a husband for 61 years, Dad to four, Pawpaw to 12, and Great Pawpaw to 4, a fisherman addicted to Caney Creek, a Baptist-rooted Methodist and an educator of devotion and zeal.
His four children are Lance Lundy of Trinidad, Lara Cathey and husband Mike of Kemp, Lyle Lundy and wife Elizabeth of Lewisville, Lillian Rosemarie Jenkins of San Antonio.
He was Pawpaw to six grandsons, Logan Lundy, Dillon Cathey, Derrell "Tom" Jenkins, Derek Cathey, Jake Lundy, Cole Lundy, and six granddaughters, Rosie Rutgers, Ashley Jenkins, Whitney Cathey, Leah Kinney, Brookelyn Lundy, Molly Lundy; and six greats, Samuel Lundy, Katherine Jenkins, Ada Rutgers, Anthony Duran, Shelbie Willeford, Christina Janicek, and two great greats, Matthew Janicek, Kasen Willeford; family friends are Theresa Crocker, Charles Abee, the Parkers, and the Trulls.
He leaves his wife, four brothers, one sister, and their spouses: J.B. Lundy, Jack Lundy, Allen Lundy, Tommie Lundy, Ruth Ann Lang, plus one brother-in-law, Larry Stanfield, and two maternal aunts, nieces, nephews, and multiple cousins.
Visitation will be Friday, October 15, 2021 from 5pm to 7pm at Huckabee_Tomlinson Funeral Home in Malakoff, TX.
Memorial and burial services will be held Sunday, October 17 at 2:00 pm at the Trinidad Cemetery with grandsons as pallbearers. If so desired, trees to plant on Lundyland, or donations to a Children's Hospital or Wounded Veterans will be honored.
Predeceasing Willie include his parents, six nieces and nephews: his faithful coffee drinkers, also four special secretaries: Alouise Brown, Nell Maxie, Rynell Thomas, Sharon Shaw; friends Bud Dulaney, Claude Jackson, R.W. Wier, Norman Lawler, and Roosevelt Womack.
Willie began his career at HCJC, then earned his B.S., M.S., and Adm. Certificate from East Texas State University. He taught and coached for Rockdale ISD Jr. High, Coahoma ISD Jr. High, and was the first Mabank Jr. High Principal for 22 years at Mabank Jr. High, retiring in 1993. He then served as High School Principal for Kemp one year, was Alternative Principal for two area schools and had special assignments in Kemp and Trinidad ISDs. He also helped sponsor the Mabank Christian Athletes. He believed "every student has a talent or a gift."
In Mabank, Willie was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Cedar Creek Chamber of Commerce in 1994, recognized at a banquet with a speaker in his honor from "The Dallas Morning News"; he helped start a Little League Program for Mabank, served on the VFD, was president of the Mabank Lions Club twice, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, filling posts as needed and becoming a lay speaker. He chaired and belonged to many committees and educational organizations. He was also a foster parent and continued to be an advocate for troubled youth.
In Trinidad, Willie joined the United Methodist Church, was a two-term mayor and served one year on the school board. He supported the THS Trojans and the MHS Panthers, and became a member of the Grand Lodge of Texas, Athens, No. 165, beginning with the Malakoff Masons.
Willie loved to travel on land; with his wife, he tried to drive through every domestic state, including Alaska. He missed a few others. He also loved the outdoors, camp-outs, and was an avid fisherman in the creeks of Cedar Creek Lake.
He said he fished "for crappie and his fellowman."
